You probably know how you use your credit union. Your paycheck lands there. You pay bills, move money to savings, use a card, or make a loan payment.

But what about the moments that don't fit neatly into one of those transactions? The month when your budget suddenly stops working. The credit question you keep meaning to figure out. A teenager who is ready to manage money but not quite ready to do it alone. The day you need help from an actual person but getting to a branch isn't convenient.

Those are moments when your membership can be useful, too.

International Credit Union Day falls on October 15 this year. Celebrated annually, the day recognizes the credit union movement and the cooperative, member-owned model behind it. It's a good reason to ask yourself a practical question: Are you making use of the help, tools, and expertise already available to you as a Chartway member?

When You Need a Clearer Picture

Sometimes the problem isn't knowing that you should save more, spend differently, or make a plan. It's figuring out what makes sense for your actual life now.

Chartway's free certified financial coaches can review your financial situation with you and help develop a customized budget and money management plan around your goals. That may be useful when income or expenses have changed, several priorities are competing for the same dollars, or you simply want another set of eyes on the numbers.

If you'd rather start on your own, Online & Mobile Banking includes free financial management tools that let you track spending, monitor your credit score, manage subscriptions, and view your budget, debts, net worth, and trends in one place. You can also link outside accounts, transfer money, deposit checks remotely, send money to other people, and manage your debit card.

One option gives you a person to talk things through with. The other lets you explore at your own pace. You can use either--or both--depending on what you need.

When Credit or Debt Is Taking Up Too Much Headspace

Credit and debt can become stressful long before they become emergencies. Maybe you're carrying high-interest balances, watching your score more closely than you'd like, or wondering which debt to tackle first.

Chartway members have access to GreenPath Financial Wellness or guidance with credit card debt and other loans, along with GreenPath LearningLab+, a free library of self-paced courses covering topics such as credit, budgeting, and housing finances.

Chartway's Digital Banking tools also give you free access to your credit score, so you can monitor it without adding another app or service.

You don't have to wait until you feel stuck to ask for help. Sometimes getting a clearer explanation or a workable next step is enough to make the situation feel more manageable.

When You Need a Person, Not Another Menu

Digital self-service is useful--until the thing you need help with isn't simple.

Chartway Video Banking lets you connect securely with a team member from wherever you are. You can ask questions about an existing account, get help with Online & Mobile Banking, upload documents, manage transfers, open an account, apply for a loan, or sign documents electronically. Shared-screen capabilities can also help when the technology itself is the problem.

And if face-to-face works better for you, you can always visit a branch or request a branch appointment.

The point isn't that one way of banking is better. It's that you have options when your needs change.

When You're Helping a Child Learn by Doing

Some member resources are designed to help the next generation build financial confidence.

Greenlight is a financial education app and debit card for kids and teens that lets parents send money, set up chores and allowances, and create savings goals. Families who register for Greenlight and add their Chartway account as a funding source receive Greenlight for free.

As kids get older, Chartway Student Checking can add another layer of real-world experience with a debit card and parental access to help them practice managing money with guidance still in place.

These tools don't replace conversations about money. They give families something real to talk about--and a safer place for kids to practice before the stakes get higher.

Do a Member-Benefit Check Every So Often

Your financial needs probably aren't the same as when you first joined Chartway. A new job, a move, a growing family, a change in income, or a new goal can make a resource you once ignored suddenly relevant.

Every so often, ask yourself:

  • What am I trying to make easier right now?
  • What financial question keeps coming up?
  • Would I benefit from a tool, some education, or a conversation?
  • Is there a resource included with my membership that I've never tried?

You don't need to know every product or service Chartway offers. Start with what you're trying to accomplish.

Get More from the Relationship You Already Have

This year's International Credit Union Day theme is "Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World." In practical terms, that can mean having people you can turn to when your financial life gets complicated - people who can listen, answer questions, and help you find the right information or tools for what comes next. Sometimes the most valuable part of your membership is simply knowing where to turn.
