There are no fees for the LifePlus checking account, as long as you do one of the following:

  • Set up a recurring direct deposit
  • Perform at least 10 credit/debit merchant transactions with your Visa Debit Card
  • Maintain a minimum monthly balance of $500 or more

Chartway makes every effort to release direct deposits as soon as received. Individual deposit times may vary by financial institution. Other restrictions may apply. For complete details, please see a member specialist. Members will be charged a $30.00 APP fee for each occurrence we authorize the account to go negative in order to pay a Debit Card POS item. Enrollment in the Account Protection Program does not guarantee payment or transactions. If any of the following are true, the member will be declined: (1) The share is negative over the $500.00 Overdraw Tolerance limit. (2) The Overdraw Tolerance limit is $0.00. (3) The share has been open for less than 90 days. (4) The primary member is not yet 18 years old. (5) The share has a warning code indicating the member has opted out of APP or the APP service is permanently/ temporarily revoked by the credit union.

Account Protection Program

No one ever intends to overdraw an account.

Perhaps you never have, but things happen. A deposit is late. Funds are tight. We get busy and forget to register a purchase in the checkbook. Mistakes happen, and Chartway understands that.

How the Account Protection Program Works

Should there not be enough money in your account for either checks, ACH, ATM, or Debit/POS transactions to clear, Chartway’s Account Protection Program may cover the expense and allow that purchase to go through without delay. You won’t have to experience the embarrassment and frustration of having your debit card transaction declined at check-out due to insufficient funds. With Chartway’s Account Protection Program, we step in and spot you the extra cash to cover your purchases—up to $500.

Make the Switch to Chartway

Switching your checking account to Chartway is as easy as 1-2-3!

1. Open your new Chartway account

Take care of your new account first, and it’ll be a smooth move from your old one.

  • Call — We can open your new account over the phone. Give us a call at (800) 678-8765 and we'll take care of it!
  • Click — It's easy and quick to open your account online. Our system will walk you through each step. (There aren't too many!)
  • Visit — Of course, you can always stop at any Chartway branch. We'd love to see you and open your new account!

2. Set up Direct Deposit

No more paper paychecks! With direct deposit, your money goes right into your Chartway account! Let your  employer know your new Chartway account number and our routing number, and you’re practically done.

If you are a Federal employee, including military, start with Sign-Up Form 1199A. If you're employed at a private company, contact your payroll or Human Resources department to get things started.

3. Close your old checking account

Redirect your automatic payments/debits to your new Chartway account. Don't forget loan payments, insurance premium payments, utility payments, membership dues, donations, and any other recurring debits to your account.

Let your outstanding checks clear from your old account. 

Once all activity has been phased out, contact your old financial institution, and request that the account be closed and the balance sent to you.

Set Up Direct Deposit

It's easy to set up direct deposit to your Chartway account!

If you need help identifying which numbers to enter, please feel free to call us for help. If the account number and routing number are not entered correctly, your deposit may fail.


To deposit your paycheck into your checking account, use your checking account number. Your checking account number is different from your member number. Do not use your member number. Your account number can be found on the MICR line at the bottom of your Chartway checks. You can also locate your account number by logging in to our online banking system and looking under the INFO tab next to the account you designate for your direct deposit. Your Account Number (ACH) is listed at the bottom.

You will also need to provide your employer with the Chartway routing/transit number. This number is 251481614 and can also be found on the MICR line at the bottom of your Chartway checks.

When you use our direct deposit, we’ll deposit your paycheck into your account as soon as we get it – which could be 1-3 days earlier than you received it before.
