Guess what day it is? Today is officially recognized as International Credit Union Day. Every October, credit unions all over the world celebrate ICUD to acknowledge our shared history, accomplishments, and philosophy of People helping People. The theme for this year is Empower Your Financial Future with a Credit Union and with that in mind, today’s celebration provides an opportunity for us to spread the word about what makes us unique, the credit union movement, and our members’ bright financial future.

You may not know that credit unions are not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperatives created to provide high dividend rates on savings and low-cost loans. They are insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and guided by a volunteer Board of Directors. Our credit union, Chartway, was founded in 1959 when seven civilian workers at Norfolk Naval Air Station each invested $5, incorporating as NorVA N.A.S. Federal Credit Union. Over the years, we have grown to more than 200,000 members and $2.7 billion in assets – becoming the Chartway Credit Union you know today.

Regardless of the data and statistics, ICUD is more than just a day marked on the calendar to measure the success of any financial institution. ICUD is a day that provides the opportunity for us to be intentional about empowering the financial future of our members. At Chartway, we strive to unlock the potential of those around us and today and in the midst of our celebratory moments we choose to keep our people first, always. We’ve included this reel posted on our social media accounts where members and team members inspire us with their own personal stories about Chartway. Though, International Credit Union Day is a day of recognition and representation, we never forget that you’re the reason we exist. We are honored that on a day like today, we have the chance to serve our members, our communities and each other. When we celebrate ICUD today, please know we’re really celebrating you – our members.

Three cheers for Credit Unions everywhere!
